CLASS and MECHANISM of Action
Generic "Zyban" is a medicine used to help people who are dependant on nicotine to give up smoking. It acts in the brain but is not the same as nicotine replacement therapy.
It is not fully understood how this medicine works to help people give up smoking, but it is known that bupropion- the active ingredient of Generic "Zyban" affects neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that are stored in nerve cells and are involved in transmitting messages between the nerve cells.
Neurotransmitters are released from nerve cells as a message is transmitted. Once the message has been transmitted, the nerve cells then reabsorb the neurotransmitter. Bupropion prevents two of these neurotransmitters, noradrenaline and dopamine, from being reabsorbed back into the nerve cells. Noradrenaline and dopamine are responsible for moderating mood and various other processes in the brain. It is thought that bupropion helps people to quit smoking by increasing the amount of noradrenaline and dopamine free to act in the brain.
Active Ingredients: bupropion hydrochloride
Inactive Ingredients: macrogol, titanium dioxide (E171), microcrystalline cellulose, hypromellose, cysteine hydrochloride, magnesium stearate, carnauba wax, edible black ink
What is Generic "Zyban" PRESCRIBED For?
Generic "Zyban" is used for the management of major depression and seasonal affective disorder (depression that occurs primarily during the fall and winter). Generic "Zyban" has been approved as an aid to patients who want to quit smoking.
How Should I Take Generic "Zyban"?
Take Generic "Zyban" exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take it in larger doses or for longer than recommended by your doctor. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results from the medication.
Generic "Zyban" can be taken with or without food.
Take each dose with a full glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break the extended-release tablet. Swallow the pill whole. It is specially made to release medicine slowly in the body. Breaking the pill would cause too much of the drug to be released at one time. If you take Generic "Zyban" to help you stop smoking, you may continue to smoke for about 1 week after you start the medicine. Set a date to quit smoking during the second week of Generic "Zyban" treatment. By that time you will have enough of the medicine in your blood stream to help you quit smoking. Talk to your doctor if you are having trouble quitting after you have used Generic "Zyban" for at least 7 weeks.
Your doctor may prescribe nicotine patches or gum to help support your smoking cessation treatment. Be sure you read all directions and safety information for the nicotine product. Using nicotine with Generic "Zyban" may raise your blood pressure and your doctor may want to check your blood pressure regularly. Do not smoke at any time if you are using a nicotine product along with Generic "Zyban". Too much nicotine can cause serious side effects. Do not stop taking Generic "Zyban" without first talking to your doctor. You may have unpleasant side effects if you stop taking this medication suddenly.
Store Generic "Zyban" at room temperature and keep away from moisture and sunlight.
What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic "Zyban"?
Because Generic "Zyban" has been known to trigger convulsions, no one with a seizure disorder should take this drug. Also avoid Generic "Zyban" if you are taking Wellbutrin or any other drug that contains bupropion, Generic "Zyban"'s active ingredient. The more Generic "Zyban" you take, the more likely you are to have a seizure.
Generic "Zyban"'s seizure-triggering potential is greater in people with an eating disorder such as bulimia or anorexia, and in those undergoing abrupt withdrawal from alcohol, sedatives, and tranquilizers such as Librium and Valium. If you suffer from one of these problems, never take Generic "Zyban". Avoid it, too, if you are taking a drug classified as an MAO inhibitor, such as the antidepressants Nardil and Parnate. Allow at least 14 days to pass between taking one of these drugs and starting your Generic "Zyban" therapy.
If bupropion or any other ingredient in Generic "Zyban" has ever given you an allergic reaction, the drug is not for you.
What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?
Do not take a double dose of this medication unless your doctor directs otherwise. If you miss a dose take it as soon as possible but if it's high time for the next dose just skip the missed one and continue your usual schedule.
What Happens if I OVERDOSE?
Information on Generic "Zyban" overdose is limited. However, any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.
Symptoms of Generic "Zyban" overdose may include: Blurred vision, confusion, grogginess, jitteriness, light-headedness, nausea, seizure, sluggishness, visual hallucinations
What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic "Zyban"?
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Stop using Generic "Zyban" and call your doctor at once if you have a seizure (convulsions) or fast, uneven heartbeats.
Continue taking Generic "Zyban" and talk to your doctor if you have any of these less serious side effects:
- headache or migraine;
- sleep problems (insomnia);
- nausea, vomiting, constipation, dry mouth;
- confusion, dizziness, agitation, tremors (shaking);
- appetite changes, weight loss or gain;
- mild itching or skin rash, increased sweating; or
- loss of interest in sex.
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.
What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic "Zyban"?
If Generic "Zyban" is used with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Generic "Zyban" with the following:
- Alcohol
- Amantadine (Symmetrel)
- Antidepressants such as Norpramin, Pamelor, Paxil, Prozac, Tofranil, and Zoloft
- Beta blockers (heart and blood pressure medications) such as Inderal, Lopressor, and Tenormin
