CLASS and MECHANISM of Action

Generic "Zantac" is an advanced medicine for the relief and prevention of heartburn associated with acid indigestion and sour stomach.
Generic "Zantac" is a type of drug known as a histamine receptor antagonist, or H2 blocker.
Histamine is a naturally occurring substance in the body. It has several functions. There are 2 types of receptors capable of binding histamine. Type 1 receptors are involved in allergic reactions. Type 2 (H2) receptors play a role in acid production. Whenever histamine binds to an H2 receptor, it increases stomach acid production. H2 blockers, also called acid reducers, work by reducing the acidity of the stomach juices. Gastric reflux is the backwards movement of stomach contents into the esophagus (swallowing tube). With less acidity, reflux is less irritating to the stomach and esophagus. H2 blockers treat the symptoms of heartburn, but don’t treat the reflux. You should also make diet and lifestyle changes to reduce the occurrence of heartburn.
Active Ingredients: Ranitidine Hydrochloride
Inactive Ingredients: monobasic potassium phosphate, alcohol (7.5%), butylparaben, dibasic sodium phosphate, saccharin sodium, sodium chloride, hypromellose, peppermint flavor, propylparaben, purified water, and sorbitol.

What is Generic "Zantac" PRESCRIBED For?

Generic "Zantac" is intended for short-term relief of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and certain stomach and duodenal ulcers. It can also be used to heal erosive esophagitis, the damage to the esophagus caused by reflux. Generic "Zantac" is a GERD treatment that is also safe for children as young as one month old.
Generic "Zantac" is also prescribed for: relief of heartburn associated with acid indigestion and sour stomach; prevention of heartburn associated with acid indigestion and sour stomach brought on by certain foods and beverages.

How Should I Take Generic "Zantac"?

Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label.
Take each Generic "Zantac" tablet with a full glass of water. Your doctor may recommend an antacid to help relieve pain. Carefully follow your doctor's directions about the type of antacid to use, and when to use it.
Do not crush, chew, or break the Generic "Zantac" effervescent tablet, and do not allow it to dissolve on your tongue. The 25-milligram effervescent tablet must be dissolved in at least 1 teaspoon of water before swallowing. The 150-milligram effervescent tablet should be dissolved in 6 to 8 ounces of water. Allow the tablet to dissolve completely in the water, and then drink the entire mixture. If you are giving this medicine to a child, you may draw the liquid mixture into a medicine dropper and empty the dropper into the child's mouth.
Generic "Zantac" granules should be mixed with 6 to 8 ounces of water before drinking.
Measure the liquid form of Generic "Zantac" with a special dose-measuring spoon or cup, not a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.
It may take up to 8 weeks of using this medicine before your ulcer heals. For best results, keep using the medication as directed. Talk with your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 6 weeks of treatment. This medication can cause you to have unusual results with certain medical tests.
