CLASS and MECHANISM of Action
Generic "Tiazac" is in a class of drugs called calcium channel blockers. Generic "Tiazac" relaxes (widens) your blood vessels (veins and arteries), which makes it easier for your heart to pump and reduces the workload on it.
Generic "Tiazac" works by slowing the heart rate, and by relaxing and widening blood vessels (arteries), which reduces the blood pressure. Widening of the arteries also increases the amount of blood reaching the heart, which can reduce the symptoms of angina.
Active Ingredients: diltiazem hydrochloride
Inactive Ingredients: diltiazem, eudragit, microcystalline cellulose, sucrose stearate,
polyacrylate dispersion (30%), povidone, talc, magnesium stearate, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, titanium dioxide, polysorbate, simethicone, gelatin, FD&C Blue No. 1, FD&C Red No. 40, D&C Red No. 28, FD&C Green No. 3, black iron oxide.

You may feel dizzy or lightheaded. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how Generic "Tiazac" affects you. To reduce the risk of dizzy or fainting spells, do not sit or stand up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. Avoid alcoholic drinks; they can make you more dizzy or increase flushing and rapid heartbeats.
If you are going to have surgery, tell your prescriber or health care professional that you are taking Generic "Tiazac".
Do not suddenly stop taking Generic "Tiazac". Ask your prescriber or health care professional how to gradually reduce the dose.

What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic "Tiazac"?
Generic "Tiazac" slows heart electrical conduction, and can cause a dangerously slow heart rate in patients with existing electrical conduction disease of the heart. Concurrent use of Generic "Tiazac" with a beta blocker (another class of medications that slow heart rate) can occasionally cause profound heart slowing. Generic "Tiazac" can aggravate heart failure and cause excessive lowering of blood pressure.
Administration of Generic "Tiazac" with digoxin can increase digoxin blood levels. Therefore, blood levels of digoxin are usually monitored to avoid toxicity. Similarly, concurrent administration of Generic "Tiazac" with an anti-seizure medication carbamazepine (Tegretol) can increase blood levels of the seizure medication, and occasionally lead to toxicity. Concurrent administration of cimetidine (Tagamet) interferes with the liver breakdown of Generic "Tiazac", and significantly increases Generic "Tiazac" blood levels. Therefore, cautious dosing is necessary when both medications are administered. Safety in children has not been established.
