What is Generic "Prozac" PRESCRIBED For?
Generic "Prozac" is prescribed for the treatment of depression – that is, a continuing depression that interferes with daily functioning. The symptoms of major depression often include changes in appetite, sleep habits, and mind/body coordination; decreased sex drive; increased fatigue; feelings of guilt or worthlessness; difficulty concentrating; slowed thinking; and suicidal thoughts.
Generic "Prozac" is also prescribed to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder. An obsession is a thought that won't go away; a compulsion is an action done over and over to relieve anxiety. The drug is also used in the treatment of bulimia (binge-eating followed by deliberate vomiting). It has also been used to treat other eating disorders and obesity.
In addition, Generic "Prozac" is used to treat panic disorder, including panic associated with agoraphobia (a severe fear of being in crowds or public places). People with panic disorder usually suffer from panic attacks - feelings of intense fear that develop suddenly, often for no reason. Various symptoms occur during the attacks, including a rapid or pounding heartbeat, chest pain, sweating, trembling, and shortness of breath.
How Should I Take Generic "Prozac"?
Generic "Prozac" usually is taken once or twice a day. To be effective, it should be taken regularly. Make a habit of taking it at the same time you do some other daily activity. The usual starting dose is 20 milligrams per day, taken in the morning. Your doctor may increase your dose after several weeks if no improvement is observed.
It may be 4 weeks before you feel any relief from your depression, but the drug's effects should last about 9 months after a 3-month treatment regimen. For obsessive-compulsive disorder, the full effect may take 5 weeks to appear.
What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic "Prozac"?
Never take Generic "Prozac" if you are taking another drug used to reat depression, called a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI), or if ou have stopped taking an MAOI in the last 14 days. Taking Generic Prozac" close in time to an MAOI can result in serious, sometimes atal, reactions, including:
- High body temperature
- Coma
- Seizures (convulsions)

If you have diabetes, Generic "Prozac" may affect your blood glucose evels. Monitor your blood glucose regularly, and share the results ith your doctor. The dose of your anti-diabetic medication(s) may eed to be adjusted.
What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?
Do not take a double dose of this medication unless your doctor irects otherwise. If you miss a dose take it as soon as possible but f it's high time for the next dose just skip the missed one and ontinue your usual schedule.
What Happens if I OVERDOSE?
Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have taken too much f this medication. Symptoms of a Generic "Prozac" overdose may nclude nausea, vomiting, fever, sleepiness, rapid or uneven eartbeat, confusion, fainting, seizures, or coma.
What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic "Prozac"?
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an llergic reaction: skin rash or hives; difficulty breathing; swelling f your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Contact your doctor promptly if ou have any of the following side effects, especially if they are new ymptoms or if they get worse: mood changes, anxiety, panic attacks, rouble sleeping, irritability, agitation, aggressiveness, severe estlessness, mania (mental and/or physical hyperactivity), thoughts f suicide or hurting yourself. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
- seizure (convulsions);
- tremors, shivering, muscle stiffness or twitching;
- a red, blistering, peeling skin rash;

- agitation, confusion, sweating, fast heartbeat.
- Other less serious side effects are more likely to occur, such as:
- feeling anxious, nervous, restless, or unable to sit still;
- drowsiness, dizziness, weakness;
- sleep problems (insomnia);
- runny nose, sore throat, headache, flu symptoms;
- nausea, diarrhea, changes in appetite;
- weight changes;
- decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm; or
- dry mouth, increased sweating.
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.
What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic "Prozac"?
If Generic "Prozac" is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of ither could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially mportant to check with your doctor before combining Generic "Prozac" ith the following:
- Alprazolam (Xanax)
- Any other antidepressants
- Carbamazepine (Tegretol)
- Clozapine (Clozaril)
- Diazepam (Valium)
- Digitoxin (Crystodigin)
- Drugs that impair brain function, such as sleep aids and narcotic painkillers
- Flecainide (Tambocor)
- Haloperidol (Haldol)
- Lithium (Eskalith)
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), and ketoprofen (Orudis KT)
- Phenytoin (Dilantin)
- Pimozide (Orap)
- Sumatriptan (Imitrex)
- Tryptophan
- Vinblastine (Velban)
- Warfarin (Coumadin)
