CLASS and MECHANISM of Action
Generic "Glucotrol XL" is an oral blood-glucose-lowering drug of the sulfonylurea class.
Generic "Glucotrol XL" appears to lower blood glucose acutely by stimulating the release of insulin from the pancreas, an effect dependent upon functioning beta cells in the pancreatic islets. Extrapancreatic effects also may play a part in the mechanism of action of oral sulfonylurea hypoglycemic drugs. Two extrapancreatic effects shown to be important in the action of Generic "Glucotrol XL" are an increase in insulin sensitivity and a decrease in hepatic glucose production. However, the mechanism by which Generic "Glucotrol XL" lowers blood glucose during long-term administration has not been clearly established. Stimulation of insulin secretion by Generic "Glucotrol XL" in response to a meal is of major importance.
Active Ingredients: Glipizide
Inactive Ingredients: polyethylene oxide, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, sodium chloride, red ferric oxide, cellulose acetate, polyethylene glycol.
What is Generic "Glucotrol XL" PRESCRIBED for?
This is an anti-diabetic medicine (sulfonylurea-type) used along with a proper diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar. Generic "Glucotrol XL" is used in patients with type 2 diabetes (non-insulin-dependent diabetes). It works by stimulating the release of your body's natural insulin. Effectively controlling blood sugar helps prevent heart disease, strokes, kidney disease, blindness, and circulation problems, as well as sexual function problems (impotence).
How should I take Generic "Glucotrol XL"
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor.
The usual starting dose of Generic "Glucotrol XL" as initial therapy is 5 mg per day, given with breakfast . Those patients who may be more sensitive to hypoglycemic drugs may be started at a lower dose. Dosage adjustment should be based on laboratory measures of glycemic control. While fasting blood-glucose levels generally reach steady-state following initiation or change in Generic "Glucotrol XL"dosage, a single fasting glucose determination may not accurately reflect the response to therapy.
