Generic Coumadin is an anticoagulant. It works by inhibiting vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors. It reduces the formation of blood clots.
Active Ingredients: Warfarin
Inactive Ingredients: croscarmellose sodium, microcrystalline cellulose, FD&C Yellow No. 6 Aluminum Lake and FD&C Blue No. 1 Aluminum Lake, FD&C Yellow No. 6 Aluminum Lake and FD&C Blue No. 1 Aluminum Lake, D&C Red No. 6 Barium Lake.
What is Generic Coumadin PRESCRIBED For?
Generic Coumadin is prescribed in treating patients with blood clots in the lower extremities to prevent extension of the clot. It is also used to reduce the risk of pulmonary embolism. Persons that have pulmonary embolism are treated with Generic Coumadin to prevent further blood clot emboli. This medicine is also prescribed to patients with arterial fibrillation and artificial heart valves to reduce the risk of strokes. Generic Coumadin helps to prevent blood clot formation in certain orthopedic surgeries such as knee or hip replacements and in preventing blood clot closure of coronary artery stents.
How Should I Take Generic Coumadin?
Each dose of Generic Coumadin should be taken orally with a glass of water. It makes no importance if you take Generic Coumadin with or without food. It is important to take Generic Coumadin regularly to get the most benefit. Do not take the medication in larger or smaller amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your health care professional. In order to get best results your health care professional may occasionally change your dose.
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed
Keep Generic Coumadin out of reach of children.
Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture.
Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic Coumadin?
Generic Coumadin can cause birth defects in an unborn baby. It is contraindicated to use Generic Coumadin if you are pregnant or plan to be pregnant. Patients that plan to have a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) or any type of surgery must stop taking Generic Coumadin.
What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time.
NOTE: Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
What happens if I OVERDOSE?
Symptoms of a Generic Coumadin overdose may include bruising; small, broken blood vessels under the skin; excessive bleeding from cuts or wounds; bleeding from the gums; blood in the stools, urine, or vomit; and heavy menstrual periods in women.
If an overdose is suspected call your local emergency and your health care professional immediately.
What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic Coumadin?
Generic Coumadin can cause major or fatal bleeding. Bleeding is more likely to occur during the starting period and with a higher dose (resulting in a higher INR). Risk factors for bleeding include:
- high intensity of anticoagulation (INR>4.0);
- age >65;
- highly variable INRs;
- history of gastrointestinal bleeding;
- hypertension;
- cerebrovascular disease;
- serious heart disease;
- anemia;
- malignancy;
- trauma;
- renal insufficiency.
Regular monitoring of INR should be performed on all treated patients. Those at high risk of bleeding may benefit from more frequent INR monitoring, careful dose adjustment to desired INR, and a shorter duration of therapy.
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your health care professional about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.
What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic Coumadin?
Generic Coumadin effects may increase if to take it with:
- Aspirin;
- Tylenol;
- Oxandrin;
- Certain vitamins;
- Antibiotics.
In order to avoid any unwanted effects tell your health care professional about all medicines that you are using including herbal (botanical) products. The last can also interact with Generic Coumadin and some of them can cause you to bleed. Below are listed some of these products:
- coenzyme Q10;
- cranberry;
- dong quai;
- garlic;
- ginkgo biloba;
- bromelains;
- danshen;
- ginseng.
Do not use any of these products without first asking your health care professional.
