CLASS and MECHANISM of Action
Generic Altace belongs to a class of drugs called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. It is used in the treatment of high blood pressure and heart failure and for preventing kidney failure due to high blood pressure and diabetes.
It is effective when Generic Altace is used alone or in combination with other high blood pressure medications, especially thiazide-type water pills (diuretics).
Generic Altace works by preventing the conversion of a chemical in your blood called angiotensin I into a more potent substance that increases salt and water retention in your body. It enhances also blood flow in your circulatory system.
Active Ingredients: Ramipril
Inactive Ingredients: Pregelatinized starch NF, gelatin, and titanium dioxide.
What is Generic Altace PRESCRIBED For?
If your health care professional has prescribed Generic Altace for you, it was likely for one or more of the following reasons:
- To reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death from cardiovascular disease if you are a person age 55+ and at high risk of a cardiovascular event
- For the treatment of high blood pressure
- If there are signs of congestive heart failure after a heart attack
Generic Altace can be used in addition to many other types of medications. In many instances, it does not replace other prescription medications you may be taking.
How Should I Take Generic Altace?
Generic Altace should be taken orally with or without food. Swallow the capsule whole, or open the capsule and sprinkle the contents on a small amount of applesauce (about 4 oz.) or in 4 oz. of water or apple juice. Eat or drink the entire mixture. This mixture can be prepared in advance and stored for 24 hours at room temperature or 48 hours in the refrigerator.
Usually Generic Altace is administrated once or twice a day. It is better to take Generic Altace around the same time every day. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your health care professional.
Generic Altace controls high blood pressure and heart failure but does not cure them. Continue to take Generic Altace even if you feel well.
What are the CONTRAINDICATIONS for taking Generic Altace?
Generic Altace should not be taken by persons that allergic to it or any its ingredients. It is contraindicated to persons that are allergic to any other ACE inhibitor.
If you have or ever had kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis); liver disease; heart disease or congestive heart failure; diabetes; or a connective tissue disease such as Marfan syndrome, Sjogren's syndrome, lupus, scleroderma, or rheumatoid arthritis, consult your health care professional before taken Generic Altace. you may not be able to use Generic Altace, or you may need a dosage adjustment or special tests during treatment.
Do not take Generic Altace during pregnancy, as death or injury to your unborn child may result, or if you've experienced serious side effects related to previous ACE inhibitors.
What Happens if I MISS A DOSE?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular regular dosing schedule.
NOTE: Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
What happens if I OVERDOSE?
If an overdose is suspected seek emergency medical attention, Symptoms of a Generic Altace overdose include extreme dizziness, weakness, fainting, and fatigue.
What are the possible SIDE EFFECTS of Generic Altace?
Prescription Generic Altace is not for everyone. Generic Altace may cause swelling of the mouth, tongue, or throat, which could cause extremely serious risk and requires immediate medical care. There have been rare reports of low blood sugar in patients taking Generic Altace with medicine for diabetes. Please contact your doctor if you have symptoms of low blood sugar such as sweating or shakiness. Common side effects include persistent dry cough, dizziness, and light-headedness due to low blood pressure.
What other drugs can INTERACT with Generic Altace?
You may not be able to take Generic Altace, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during your treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed below:
- potassium supplement such as K-Dur, Klor-Con, and others;
- salt substitutes that contain potassium;
- any of the diuretics (water pills) triamterene (Dyrenium, Maxzide, Dyazide), spironolactone (Aldactone), or amiloride (Midamor);
- any other diuretic (water pill) such as hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, HydroDiuril, others), furosemide (Lasix), bumetanide (Bumex), indapamide (Lozol);
- lithium (Lithobid, Eskalith, others).
Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Generic Altace or affect your condition. Talk to your health care professional before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines.
